AFCON 2023: CAF shifts tournament to 2024

The Confederation of African Football has postponed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to 2024. The event was scheduled to hold between June and July next year in Ivory Coast has been moved to January 2024.

The last AFCON which was held in Cameroon earlier in January this year was supposed to hold in 2021 but the Covid-19 pandemic forced CAF to push the tournament to this year.

Ivory Coast was supposed to hold the next continental spectacle in June next year. Thereafter, the competition would return to its previous bi-annual schedule. CAF has now pushed the competition to 2024 due to weather concerns with heavy rains usually recorded in the earlier scheduled period.

In Ivory Coast, the rainy season starts around May/June and continues till about October as conferment by the Ivorian weather experts that CAF consulted.
