Confed Cup: Rangers end Pyramids perfect run, Enyimba in 1-1 draw
Enugu Rangers stunned Egyptian’s Pyramids FC 1-0 in Cairo to end their four-match winning streak in the Confederation Cup on Sunday.
Ifeanyi George latched onto a long pass from Msonter Shimaga to skip past his marker and beat the advancing Pyramids goalkeeper in the 73rd minute.
After securing the top spot of the group with 12 points from their previous four matches, Pyramids coach Ante Cacic decidedly rested several of his key players.
Rangers are now third of the group with five points, one behind another Egyptian side Masry who were playing FC Nouadhibou of Mauritania later on Sunday.
In Aba, Enyimba’s Confederation Cup quarter-final qualification bid suffered a setback after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Hassania Agadir.
After beating AC Paradou 4-1 in their last outing, Enyimba were hoping for a win against the Moroccans to qualify from Group D.
However, Fatai Osho’s men were held to a draw by the North Africans at the Enyimba International Stadium.
The visitors took the lead after two minutes through Youssef Alfahli. Enyimba equalised in the 16th minute courtesy of Augustine Oladapo.
In the second half, the Nigerians mounted pressure but were unable to break the Moroccans’ solid defensive network.
