It was like the goal was never going to come but finally a 94th minute goal from Alalade Wasiu handed Nigeria’s Enyimba a 1-0 win over CARA Brazzaville in their final CAF Confederation Cup, Group C match. The match was played at the newly reopened Enyimba International Stadium on Wednesday night.
The late Wednesday result means Enyimba has finished atop of Group C with 12 points and as well qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition. But in spite of the loss Brazzaville also qualified for the knockout stages have finished second in Group C with nine points.
Wasiu Alalade was the hero for the two-time CAF Champions League winners as he struck at injury time much to excitements of fans at the newly refurbished arena.
In the other group match, Williamsville Athletic Club of Ivory Coast drew goalless with Djoliba in Abidjan.
Enyimba started with a shot on goal in third minute, but Augustine Oladapo’s drive from the edge of the box shaved the wrong side of the post. This move raised a lot of hopes but it took 84 minutes for the goal to come.
Ten minutes later Augustine Dimgba was at it again for the Nigerian side, but he saw his shot from 20-yards out well-saved by the Brazzaville keeper.
Brazzaville offered very little in terms of attack in the opening half with their only significant shot on goal coming on the half hour mark when Ngoma Mbo broke into the box, but he was denied in a one-on-one with the keeper. The first half ended goalless.
Enyimba maintained the pressure in the second half and Oladapo went close to scoring again in the 55th minute, but his attempt from just inside the box went inches wide of the target while the visitors continued to struggle.
The Aba team pushed and pushed forward and were finally rewarded when Wasiu scored the in the 94th minute.
