Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo has called time on his international career with the Super Eagles. The China based player is the leading goal scorer at the African Cup of Nations as the competition ends today, Friday.
He announced his retirement just after Nigeria’s third-place victory over Tunisia on Wednesday. He reportedly informed Coach Gernot Rohr of his decision before leaving to join his club in China immediately after the game. The Eagles captain Mikel Obi also, expectedly, retired from international football after that match which Nigeria beat Tunisia 1-0 to win the bronze medal.
An associate of the player told the media: “He had discussed his decision with the coach before the third-place match, saying that the constant abuse was taking a toll on his young family. After the game, he gave his jersey as a souvenir to the coach, said his goodbye.”
Ighalo made 35 appearances for Nigeria, scoring 16 goals. He is leading African strikers in Egypt with five goals in the competition.
He was also top scorer through the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with seven goals.
A World Cup miss against Argentina got him so much flak with Nigerians with some reportedly threatening his family.
