Quadri surges on, Oshonaike out as African champion falls

Aruna Quadri, Nigeria’s last man standing in the men’s singles round of 16 event of the 2019 ITTF Nigeria Open remains on course to retain the title after a 4-0 whitewash of Egyptian, Mohamed El-Beiali.

Quadri did not give the Egyptian a chance in the 11-7, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 victory to cruise into the quarterfinals.

He will face Brazilian, Thiago Menteiro, in the quarterfinals. Menteiro defeated Senegalese, Ibrahima Diaw, 4-3 (10-12, 6-11, 2-11, 11-5, 1210, 11-5, 11-6).

In the other round of 16 ties played, 2019 ITTF Africa Cup losing finalist, Ahmed Saleh of Egypt beat Thailand’s Supanut Wisutmaythangkoon 4-0 (11-2, 11-7, 13-11, 11-2).

Frenchman, Alexandre Robinot beat Slovenian, 4-2 (11-8, 11-4, 11-4, 7-11, 6-11, 12-10).

In the women’s singles, Africa’s top seeds, Funke Oshonaike and Dina Meshref are out of the competition.

Nigeria’s Oshonaike retired injured in the fifth set having lost 3 sets. Her opponent, Barbora Balazova of Slovekia won the game 11-5, 6-11, 6-11, 11-5, 6-0.

Balazova face Italy’s Debora Vivarelli in the quarterfinals. The Italian beat Egyptian, Farah Abdel-Aziz 4-1 (14-12, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8).

The African women’s champion, Meshref fell 4-0 (9-11, 6-11, 7-11, 9-11) to Indian, Streeja Akula.

Akula will next take on Croatia’s Ida Jazbec who survived Belgium’s Lisa Lung 4-3 (13-11, 7-11, 9-11, 11-5, 19-21, 11-4, 11-2). 

In the other quarterfinal fixtures, Indian, Pooja Sahasrabudhe faces Russia’s Yana Noskova while another Russian, Polina Mikhailova will be up against German, Yuan Wan.
