Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has confirmed that his captain Mikel Obi suffered a fracture when on Friday but that the Super Eagles medical team members are working very hard to get him fit for the last Group D match against Argentina on Tuesday, Extrasportsnigeria.com reports.
Rohr added that the midfielder could play with a plaster around the region. The coach said in a video uploaded by the Nigeria Football Federation’s media team that the scan conducted on Saturday showed that the Tianjin Teda star suffered a fracture of the Metacarpal in the late minutes of Nigeria’s match Iceland on Friday
He said on Sunday via the video, ”Unfortunately there is one injury, we have the captain who has fracture of the Metacarpal but I think he can play with a cast, the medical team is working on it
”Everybody had massage, special massages for the legs, for recovery. There are no injuries again, the weather is fine, yesterday we had rain, which was good for recovery.”
Rohr had told reporters in Russia immediately after the Iceland game that he was very confident that his captain would recover in time for next Tuesday’s final group game given the nature of the injury sustained by the midfielder.
Rohr told journalists, “Mikel got a knock on a stiff part of his body and that caused him great pains. He was already quite tired when that occurred because it was in the second half and he had run around a lot defending and playing the new role.
“But I don’t think it is much of an issue with Mikel Obi; he should recover in time like the other players for the next game.”
Eagles trained Sunday morning their base camp in Essentuki before they flew to St Petersburg. They are settling down already in the new city.
The squad watched the Germany/Sweden match as a group with their coach. Rohr is a German. Germany needed a last minute free kick in added time to win 2-1.
