Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, were on Friday afternoon blown out 110-65 by New Zealand in their opening match at the 2018 Commonwealth Games holding in Gold Coast, Australia, reports.

The Tigers got their footing wrongly from the tip off and were down at 24-15 by the end of the first quarter. Hopes that the former African champions would recover and close up the gap fell on the way side as the second quarter ended 50-35 for the New Zealanders.

By the time the teams returned to the court after the break, it had become very clear which of the teams would take the maximum points. New Zealand held on to an 81-43 lead when the game took a short break at the end of the third quarter.

New Zealand completed the good run with the match ending at 110-65 to the short of Nigerian fans who could not really back D’Tigers to beat New Zealand but expected a very close game.

Nigeria is campaign at the Games with a new team. It is a team quite different from the team that played the World Cup qualifiers in Mali in February with just a handful of the players that played the African Nations Cup last year in Tunisia.

Nigeria will face Canada in their next match billed for Saturday.
