Nigeria rugby: Weir calls up 16 for Black Stallions

Nigeria Rugby Sevens squad will enter camp for Africa Men’s Regional Sevens Tournament to be held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on 15 -16 September, 2018. The players are expected to arrive in camp from Tuesday, September 5th, reports.

The team list has sixteen players with the inclusion of three as foreign-based and Weir is very positive that in this Black Stallions squad, he has a talented group of players with the right mix of experience and youth.

He said, “I’m looking forward to seeing what the team can produce in Abidjan next weekend. The foreign based players will make a big difference. Dajuma Mshelia has blistering pace and will be vital to the team. Temi Okenla got injured during a pre-season match with his club and is out and experienced playmaker and captain, Azeez Ladipo is also a doubt due to injury he sustained on Saturday at training.

“However, we will not lack pace as we still have our wing men Christian Ogar and Onoru Jatto. Finally, I am sure that Joseph Mogaji, Yannick Mukoro and Isaac Sani will bring in power play onto the squad.”

Weir is the current Black Stallions 7s coach and ex-Kenya and Ugandan national teams coach. He had previously coached South African national sevens school teams.

The Abidjan tournament also serves as 2020 Olympics pre-qualifiers and 2019 All Africa Games qualifier.
