Russian police have confirmed that former Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu was robbed in Russia on Sunday. The former Super Eagles captain had $11,000 stolen from his luggage when he flew into the country for the World Cup and the pre-World Cup events.
State news agency TASS reports that Kanu flew in from London through Moscow and on to Kaliningrad, where Nigeria plays Croatia in its opening World Cup Group D match on June 16. When he arrived, he found the cash missing from his luggage.
The Moscow Times also confirmed that two baggage handlers were detained after Kanu discovered that he was missing $11,000 upon receiving his bags and checking in at a hotel in Kaliningrad.
Police spokeswoman Irina Volk says two baggage handlers at Sheremetevo airport in Moscow have been detained on suspicion of theft.
“Two handlers who unloaded baggage from the London-to-Moscow flight and stole the money from the passenger’s luggage have been identified and detained,” the ministry said in an online statement.
Kanu took part in a FIFA Legends match on Sunday in Kaliningrad, one of 11 Russian cities to host the tournament that gets underway in 10 days’ time.
