Stoke City are set to sign former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder Mikel Obi. One-year deal is on the table.
The 33 year old former Nigeria captain, became a free agent after he left Turkish side Trabzonspor by mutual consent in March.
Mikel made 249 Premier League appearances for Chelsea in an 11-year spell, which ended when he left Stamford Bridge in 2017.
While he was with the Stamford Bridge team, he won the Champions League and Europa League; two Premier Leagues, three FA Cups and the League Cup.
Mikel moved from Stamford Bridge to Chinese side Tianjin TEDA and had a brief spell at Middlesbrough in 2019.
Championship side Stoke won three of their last four games in 2019-20 to pull away from relegation trouble and finish 15th under former Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill.
Earlier in the week Mikel was linked to the English Premier League via West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies are back in the topflight for the upcoming season and had been linked with an interest to woo the midfielder to play holding role.
There were also reports linking Mikel with a move to Braziian clubs Botafogo and Internacional before this report on Stoke.
