Super Eagles will get full bonus pay for the 1-1 result they achieved against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in Yaoundé on Monday Extrasportsnigeria.com reports. A goal from Moses Simon in the 30th minute put Nigeria ahead before Cameroon came back into the game with a goal Vincent Aboubakar via a penalty kick.
The Nigeria Football Federation boss Amaju Pinnick announced on the chartered flight conveying the players back to Abuja after the match that the federation had decided to pay the players the same bonus they usually received for a win even though the game ended in a draw. The players receive $5,000 for a win and half that amount for a draw but the NFF officials equated the heroics of the players over the two legs as okay for an upgrade.
“And lastly but not the least, the President has asked me to also inform the players that they will get paid full for a win even though the match ended 1-1. This is the federation’s way of rewarding the exemplary quality of the team over the two legs,” the president announced through the NFF Director of Communications aboard an Arik Air flight.
The announcement was received with thunderous applause from the other passengers in the plane even as the NFF also assured the players that they would receive the other cash rewards from their friends and partners in the course of the week. The result in Yaoundé finanally eliminated the reigning African champions from the race to Russia 2018 while Nigeria gained a strong foothold as the Eagles now need just a point from two remaining matches to qualify.
The 1-1 has given Eagles 10 points ahead of the nearest Group B contender Zambia with four points. Algeria and Zambia were getting set to play their fourth games on Tuesday as of the time of this report.
