Tornadoes coach celebrates first away win, Plateau stay top

Niger Tornadoes coach Abubakar Bala says the win at Remo Stars on Wednesday is one of the happiest moments of his career.

His team defeated hosts Remo 1-0 in Wednesday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 7 clash at the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu.

Ebenezer Odeyemi’s lone goal handed the Minna outfit their first three points on the road this season.

Bala told SuperSport, “I must confess this away victory against Remo Stars is the happiest moment of my 32-year coaching career. The draw at champions Enugu Rangers actually opened the door for us, reminding us that we could always win matches on the road.

“The draw was equally special because it came against the reigning champions and today (Wednesday) we were able to secure all three points.

“Today’s win will further serve as a morale booster to the players that they can win away matches. We have been able to recoup the points we lost at home to newcomers ABS FC and Katsina United.”

The match, which had in attendance the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, saw Tornadoes goalkeeper, Aliko Mustapha produce great saves from a desperate Remo Stars. He had a double-save on 77 minutes, and also was on point when Ekene Awazie fired an attempt to score

Table-toppers, Plateau United maintained their position after defeating El-Kanemi 2-0 in Jos. Salomon Junior scored with a header in 12 minutes, and Jimmy Ambrose sealed the three points for the Tin City boys with a long-range shot two minutes to half-time.

Abia Warriors survived an early scare to draw 1-1 at home against Sunshine Stars in Umuahia. Joseph Abiodun had given the visitors a lead on 44 minutes when he converted a corner kick, but Ndifreke Effiong found the net three minutes later, to level the match.

Enugu Rangers, Wikki Tourists, FC IfeanyiUbah and Rivers United had their matches postponed till a later date, because of their involvement in continental duties this weekend.

Two matches will hold Thursday as Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) will host the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club (MFM FC), and Enyimba will host Akwa United.
