D’Tigress defeated Turkey 74-68 as Nigeria recorded their first win in the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup holding in Terife, Spain, reports.

The Sunday night game was the second group game for the African champions after the 86-68 loss to Australia in the Group opener. Ing match played on Saturday while Turkey won their opener against Argentina also on Saturday.

On Sunday the first quarter ended 15-7 for the Turks but the Nigerians fought back to take the second quarter 22-17. But the drama only started when the teams returned from the break. The superbly defending D’Tigress drilled their opponents in the third quarter to finish 23-10 and had taken the lead at this point. The fourth quarter ended 26-22 to Turkey but it was a fight back too late as D’Tigress held on to the buzzer.

Sarah Ogoke scored 22 points on a night she was truly on fire against the Europeans. Incidentally Turkey defeated Nigeria in a friendly match played barely 10 days ago in Istanbul.

After the loss to the Opals on Saturday, Evelyn Akhator wrote on her Twitter handle, “We fought but then we just gave up a little in the last 5 minutes of the game. We shot ourselves in the foot. @ECambage is a monster – she really is a beast. Overall, we just need to learn and come back really strong for the next #FIBAWWC game against Turkey.”

On Sunday D’Tigress indeed came back stronger for Turkey.

D’Tigress led by Otis Hughley are drawn in Group B of the competition along with Australia, Turkey and Argentina and will play their next group match against Argentina on Tuesday.
