Professionals and amateur adults were in their numbers at the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon 2021 to run for fame and cash but it was young Miss Olorunfunmi Ogunbowale that captured the natural attention of the immediate crowd and her fame has gone across the continents. The 11 year-old who is a JSS 1 student of Okeowa United Basic Secondary School in Ijebu Ode completed the 21km half marathon to the amazement of the spectators and the media. The event was held last Saturday.
Interestingly, Olorunfunmi ran the entire 21km barefooted. She was spotted at the finish line by Bukola Olopade, the CEO of Nilayo Sorts – consultants to the event – who immediately tagged on the record set by the young runner. Immediately the sum of N500,000 cash was donated to the young runner in two batches of N250,000 each by two impressed donors.
Olopade in turn handed over the young lady to the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Kehinde Oluwadare and the Heritage Group for her onward professional nurturing and development.
There are two races left to be competed in Ogun State this year, both under the organisation of Nilayo Sports Management, and they are the Abeokuta 5km Race and the Remo Ultra Marathon African Challenge. She is expected to participate in both.
