Gombe United defender killed in Benin

Tragedy hit Gombe United and Nigerian football just as the year is rounding off as a Gombe defender, Uzama Douglas, was on Thursday shot dead in his home town, Benin City, Edo State. Even though his assailants are still unknown many people have suggested they could be cultists. Extrasportsnigeria.com learnt Douglas was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The left-back, a former member of Flying Eagles squad was was said to have been hit by a bullet while in company with some his close friends who were also on holidays in Benin.

He became the second Nigerian league player killed in the last quarter of the year. Izu Joseph, who was a defender with Shooting Stars of Ibadan was shot dead by a stray bullet fired by men of the Joint Military Task Force in Bayelsa State.
