Abia Warriors coach, Imama Amapakabo has clearly achieved the status of the coach of the month having led his team through four games unbeaten in the period. Abia Warriors secured this weekend’s maximum points with a 1-0 defeat of Wikki Tourists on Saturday.
The former CHAN Eagles coach had earlier in the season got a three-match ultimatum from the club management following a stretch without any win. The Warriors have not only overcome the ultimatum but have swiftly moved up from the drop zone to the upper part of the table.
Amapakabo would say after Saturday’s win: “I believe in myself: I was seeing the pictures of what I was painting. I could see it but a lot of people were not seeing it. All I needed was time and I believed the results will come.”
On Saturday on home turf, Fatai Abdullahi’s first-half goal from the spot earned the Warriors the three points. They are now unbeaten in 4 straight games and having picked 10 points from a possible 12. The goal was Abdullahi’s third goal this season.
They were one goal up away to Kwara United on Wednesday in Ilorin until the last minute of the added five minutes before the home team equalised to make the final result 1-1.
In the beginning it was not so as the Warriors struggled to get their first win of the season. Playing their home games in Aba instead of their base made the trip and trainings quite herculean. Imama recalls the trying period.
“For those games we lost, I kept on saying we were creating chances but not scoring which was my responsibility as a coach to work on and also for the players to interpret it on the pitch. I am glad we are now scoring.”
