Super Eagles goalkeeper recovering well from Sunday injury

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has confirmed to teammates and friends that he was getting a lot better less than 24 hours after he got injured in a game on Sunday.

Akpeyi had suffered what appeared like a nasty injury following his collision with an opposing player. The Nigerian was in goal for his club, Kaizer Chiefs, in their ABSA Premier League match against Bidvest Wits at the FNB Stadium. He got injured late in the first half of the top-rated game.

He had dealt with a cross from the left side of the pitch but then collided with the leg of an onrushing Bidvest player.

Akpeyi received a lengthy medical attention on the pitch which forced the game to be stopped for a long period before he was finally carried off the pitch.

Painfully too, Kaizer Chiefs also lost the game. Substitute Bienvenu Evanga scored the winning goal for Bidvest Wits deep into stoppage time.

Chiefs were runaway leaders at the top before the Covid-19 enforced break but they have have picked up just five points out of a possible 15 to allow defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns close up the gap. Sunday’s result is another dent on their race. There are just two games to go in this season.
