Atletico Madrid manager considers new role for Ademola Lookman to rediscover best form

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is considering giving Ademola Lookman a new role as he works to help the Super Eagles attacker rediscover his best form.

A report in  Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo suggests Simeone is exploring a 4-3-3 formation that could see Lookman operate on the left wing.

This season, the former African Footballer of the Year has played in multiple test positions, including left winger, support striker, center forward and attacking midfielder in a bid to find the best fit.

Lookman made an impressive start following his arrival from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, scoring and assisting in Atletico’s 5-0 victory over Real Betis.

The 29-year-old went on to deliver crucial performances, helping Atletico reach the Copa del Rey final and the Champions League semi-finals. He finished the campaign with nine goals and four assists in 24 appearances.

However, Lookman has struggled for consistency this season, recording two goals and one assist in 13 appearances, with a  total of 692 minutes of play.

Although he recently assisted Julian against Stuttgart, his impact against Deportivo was limited, leading to his half-time substitution.

Simeone hopes a tactical adjustment will reignite Lookman’s performances and help him regain his importance in the squad. A renewed drive with the Spanish club should also help boost his work with Nigeria, as his performance with the Super Eagles has dipped in recent times.
